What few people know is that the Park had a very old but effective pumping system that utilized two very large pumps that pumped water drawn from Riverviews lagoon back out to the Des Moines River through 12 inch pipes anytime the water would start to rise in the park. Usually every spring we had to run these giant pumps 24 hours a day and then also anytime unusually heavy rains would start.

Many times the Des Moines river outside the levee would be higher than the elevation of Riverview but the pumps would do their job keeping the park flood free............
